To induce cervical priming and labor, term pregnant women (38~42 weeks)with an unfaborable cervical status land who had below 10 points by Bishops' score were given 0.5mg oral prostaglandin(n=40), 3 mg prostaglandin E2 vaginal suppository
(n=40)and
oxytocin intravenously (n=40) from March, 1989 to February, 1990.
The effects of above three groups were also compared with normal spontaneous labor group (control group, n=40).
@ES The results were as follows;
@EN 1. Age distribution, gestational period and parity in each group were not significantly different.
2. Success rate with labor pain from induction was not significant different in each groups.
3. In the case of failure, PGE2 vaginal suppository group was significantly better than oral PG group and oxytocin group in cervical ripening over 23 points by Bishop's score (P<0.05).
The failure group which was added with oxytocin (Duration of induction to Delivery; 7.8 hours) was not significantly different from oxytocin group (Duration of induction to Delivery; 8.3 hours), but it did influence the duration of labor that was
somewhat shorter in primigravida group.
4. Induction to delivery time was similar in each success group, also postpartum hemorrhage and Apgar score were similar.
5. The cesarean section rate in PGE2 vaginal suppository group was significantly decreased from oxytocin group and oral PG group(P<0.05).
6. Side effects, such as gastrointestinal troubles in PGE2 viginal suppository group were less than oral PG group.
In this study, induction of labor with PGE2 vaginal suppository group was similar to those of spontaneous labor and in spite of the failure to induce labor, it was simple and noninvasive method and effective in cervical ripening .
